I am really glad that you are taking the time to find out about Seabird Island Community School. It’s a community we care deeply about and an environment we believe our students thrive in.
I’d value the opportunity to share two foundational pillars of our school through which I believe you will have the best chance to understand the essence of Seabird Island Community School.
Firstly, I’d like to share our philosophy; it’s our purpose, it’s what drives us. It centers on perpetuating and strengthening our Stó:lō culture and language through education. We believe that education should provide our students with teachings, experiences and values which will develop personal qualities such as self-reliance, cooperation, generosity, honesty, and respect for others and for the environment.
Secondly, our vision is for education to be a preparation for total living. We aim to address the physical, social, emotional, spiritual, and academic needs of every learner. Our ultimate goal is for students to become involved, active, participating members of our community while being well-grounded in their cultural identity.
At Seabird Island Community School, we are deeply committed to nurturing the whole child and empowering them with the knowledge, values and skills to lead successful lives while honoring their Indigenous roots.

How to Apply to SICS
At SICS, we understand that choosing the right educational path for your child is a decision of paramount importance. That’s why we’ve crafted a straightforward and welcoming registration process to ensure a smooth transition into our vibrant learning community.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Seabird Island Community School a public or independent school?
As of July 1, 2022, Seabird Island Community School falls under Education Jurisdiction and is not considered a public or independent school. It has full control over the education provided under an agreement with Canada.
Do students receive a British Columbia Dogwood diploma after graduating?
Yes, as a school under Education Jurisdiction, Seabird Island Community School is fully accredited to grant the British Columbia Grade 12 Dogwood diploma upon graduation.
Is the regular BC curriculum followed at the school?
Yes, the school uses the BC public school curriculum for core and elective courses. However, under Education Jurisdiction, Seabird can develop additional elective courses centered around traditional teachings, practices and knowledge.
What teacher certification is required to teach at the school?
All teachers must be active registered members with the BC Teacher Regulation Branch. Some trades and language instructors may receive subject-specific Letters of Permission from the branch.
Do educational assistants require certification?
Yes, all educational assistants (EAs) require certification from an accredited college and must provide their certificate when employed.
When can new students register during the school year?
Any student administration believes wants to continue their education can enroll until September 25th by signing a contract with the school. After that date, usually only Seabird band members with unique circumstances will be considered for late enrollment.
