Halq’eméylem
Language lies at the heart of Seabird Island Community School’s mission and identity. As a school under Indigenous education jurisdiction, SICS has the freedom to center traditional language and ways of knowing in both its curriculum and overall approach. The Halq’eméylem language is woven throughout, with dedicated Halq’eméylem instructors, educational assistants, and even “Halq’eméylem Warriors” on staff. Cultural events like the Halq’eméylem Translation Contest reinforce the importance of preserving and celebrating this living language. Beyond the classroom, students experience land-based learning opportunities that reinforce the inextricable link between language, culture, and the land. By prioritizing Halq’eméylem instruction and immersing students in Indigenous worldviews, SICS aims to instill a deep sense of cultural grounding and pride. Language revitalization is key to upholding the school’s philosophy of promoting and strengthening Seabird’s rich heritage for generations to come.
